முக்காலுக்கு ஏகாமுன் முன்னரையில் வீழாமுன்
அக்கா லரைக்கால் கண்டு அஞ்சாமுன் - விக்கி
இருமாமுன் மாகாணிக்கு ஏகாமுன் கச்சி
ஒருமாவின் கீழரைஇன்று ஓது - கவி காளமேகம்
The song as such means this: Before you start using a third leg (முக்கால், a walking stick), before your hair turns grey (முன் நரை), before you sight the minions (காலர் கால் - minions of Yama or the legs of Yama) of Yama (காலர், who have come to take your life), before you fall sick, hick-up (விக்கி) and cough (இருமல்) before you are taken to the great land (grave yard, மாகாணி), (that is, before you age and die) go today and hail the lord who dwells under the shade of a single mango tree (ஒரு மா) in Kanchi (கச்சி) ("Hail Ekaambarar, in Kanchi, before your time runs out" is the gist of this song!)
What is even more special?? The wordplay (of course!) Apart from the above said meaning, the words used are also the Tamil names[1] of some fractions:
முக்கால் [mukkaal] - 3/4
அரை [arai] - 1/2
கால் [kaal] - 1/4
அரைக்கால் [araikkaal] - 1/8
இருமா [irumaa] - 1/10
மாகாணி [maagaani] - 1/16
மா (ஒருமா) [maa] - 1/20
கீழரை [keezharai] - 1/640
Notice how the poet managed to not only embed these fractions in his song, but also kept them in descending order - this amazes me more than the fact that such a song could be composed!
