The legend has that the demon Tharakasura harassed the life of deities and Sages.  All the deities assembled and appealed to Maharishi Narada to advise the best possible ways to get rid of the demon. All the deities and Sages arrived on this sacred and worshipped Lord Shiva as per the instructions of Maharishi Narada.  In order to save themselves from the sight of the demon, they transformed into ants and started to worship Lord Shiva on this sacred land.  But, deities found it difficult to worship the fair sized smooth surface of the Linga with their teeny tiny form.    The Linga malformed into a mound after experiencing their difficulties and resided as ant-hill on this sacred place.   Hence the presiding deity has got his name ‘Erumbeeswarar’ and this place came to known as ‘Erumbiyur’.

This temple remains open from 6.00 AM to 12.00PM in the morning and 4.00 PM to 7.30PM in the evenings.
